"At 9 months Seth is crawling everywhere. He can really speed up when heading for something he knows to be a no-no. He’s very good with thumb and first finger—can pick up the tiniest pieces of fluff on the floor. He likes to put his plastic blocks back into their canister. He practices his “d” and “g” sounds a lot. Sometimes it sounds like he’s saying Degas and sometimes god damn. If other little children want to pat or hug him, Seth’s little face crumples. He still doesn’t seem to fear strangers but it takes him a while to warm up to them. He fights taking his naps sometimes. He sleeps 12 hours a night. He weighs 20-9 and is 29 inches."
One area in which the differences are becoming apparent is size. Since her 6 month check up, Norah has gotten rounder and shorter. She now weighs 16-11 and is 26 inches long...with a good stretch. The first time the nurse measured her length, she noticed Norah had fallen off the charts. So, she re-measured and told Norah to give her a big stretch, and voila - 26 inches. She is in approximately the 20th percentile for weight (up slightly from 6 months), and the 10th (with the stretch) for height. Six month sleepers fit her perfectly; in fact she is in very few 9 months clothes at all.
From 8 to 9 months we saw significant change in Norah's mobility. She is now an expert at pulling herself up, and can do it against a flat wall with nothing to grab. She has learned how to slowly let herself down from a standing position, and seems to know to protect her head a bit when she falls backwards. She is still most comfortable with the army crawl, although she did recently crawl a bit on all fours so that may change soon.
Norah seems to love her mobility and makes use of it to explore, explore some more, and do more exploring. Every time she rounds the corner into the kitchen she heads straight for the towels hanging from the oven and pulls them down one by one. She has discovered things that are "not a toy," such as the AV equipment, plants and computer cords. Her teachers at daycare laugh that several times a day they don't see her in the middle of the room with the rest of the kids and find her in a corner under a crib.
Norah's eating and sleeping habits have not changed much in the past month. She is still typically alseep by 6:15 or 6:30 and sleeps between 12 and 12 1/2 hours, although she has started waking up a bit earlier (we're hoping that doesn't become a pattern). She probably eats around 10oz. per meal of solids (still twice per day), although that is a rough guess. I know everyone at daycare can't believe how much she can eat for her size.
Norah seems to be comfortable with just about anyone, although I have noticed that she is more aware of people around her. She now always watches me leave her room at daycare. It just about breaks my heart every day to leave her there with her big eyes looking back at me. Don't get me wrong - she is fine. In fact, she never cries when I leave (I'm sure the day will come), and in fact usually gives me a cheesy grin, giggles, and shakes whatever toy she has at the moment.
In addition to da, da, da, Norah also says ma, ma, ma more and more frequently. I have also heard na, na, na, and ba, ba, ba.
Overall we continue to have so much fun with Norah. She is good at entertaining herself (although we enjoy playing with her), smiles a lot, and makes us laugh. We talked about it tonight, and decided that we're going to keep her. :)
