It appears as though I never included Norah's one year stats in a blog entry, but according to the pediatrician's records she has lost 2 ounces in the past 3 months. Yikes! He commented that she has fallen on the charts, and my concern was that she didn't have far to fall. She is now in the 3rd percentile for weight, but since she remains in the 10th and 25th for height and head respectively, he is not concerned. (If all three were showing a downward trend it would be a sign to him that she is lacking something.) Her length is 29 inches.
He asked me, "Is she active?" Obviously this was very early in the visit, otherwise he would have know the answer is a resounding "YES!" He thinks that may have something to do with it, but since I reported that she is a very good eater, and that she gets a variety of fruits, veggies and protein, he isn't worried. Oh, and he also noticed her rather large stomach.
Seth's mom recorded the following about him at 15 months:
At 15 months Seth can run. He looks somewhat like a duck but he can really move—especially when he’s running to hide from a parent. He has started to use a spoon at meals and does quite well if it’s a sticky food like applesauce. New words are: car, ball, door, home (recognizes our house). He is no longer nursing. Still takes 2 naps a day. Had chickenpox—everywhere!"
One of Norah's favorite past times is being chased. When we get close to her in a corner of the bathroom or kitchen she likes to "escape" by running right by us. Other interests these days include (as you know if you frequently read my blog) roaring like a lion, barking like a dog and mooing like a cow. She has also become a trickster. She likes to act like she is going to give you something, but then yank it back at the last second.
She loves the new wooden stacking ring toy mimi and papa got her for Christmas, and also enjoys pull toys. Another favorite is a tupperware bowl and lid, or bowl with cheerios and a spoon. Either of these combinations occupy her for quite some time.
Thankfully, she has shown a renewed interest in books. Right now she is into the jungle book (that came with the stuffed lion, which started all the roaring), and the little word books that show a picture and the word for various objects. We have one for animals, one for colors, one for food, etc. She likes us to sit on the floor so she can bring us the book, back up between our legs, and sit down so we can look at it together.
Norah is trying to say everything. She points and points and points, and says, "dah" about 512 times a day. We just say, "That's right, napkin." Or, "That's right, blanket." She seems to be satisfied with that. It is obvious that she is just a little sponge these days.
We made a big switch this week by letting Norah eat most of the food at daycare. We got a copy of the menu for the week and crossed off anything we didn't want her to have (e.g. juice and rice crispy treats), and provided a substitute for those items as necessary. There is still some maintenance involved, but it is much better than providing all of her food. I felt the relief immediately. And according to her teachers, Norah eats everything. This week she had baked chicken, macaroni and cheese and mixed veggies for one lunch, meatloaf, potatoes and veggies for another, and salisbury steak, noodles and applesauce for a third. Pretty good variety, I'd say. I could just do without the rice crispy treats, but oh well.
Norah still goes to bed around 6:30 and sleeps until between 6:30 and 7AM most mornings. 5AM wake times are infrequent, but do exist. We refuse to get her up until 6:30 at a minimum. Naps continue to be somewhat unpredictable, but according to the pediatrician she is getting above average sleep overall for her age so we shouldn't be concerned. (I didn't go into how difficult it is to make any plans.)
Norah has started giving a lot of open mouthed kisses, and she also likes to blow kisses. She sleeps with a snuggly every night and often has it tucked under her arm when we check on her before we crawl in bed.
I don't have any great recent pictures of Norah, but here are a few of her with her friend and neighbor Connor. They're not entirely sure about each other, but Connor seemed to enjoy pulling Norah in the wagon and she was completely satisfied letting him do it. Connor is almost exactly a year older than Norah.
